The Scientific name for the fennel is Foeniculum vulgare. It is a member of the family Apiaceae that is a hardy perennial plant indigenous to the shores of the Mediterranean. Fennel, the highly flavorful herb is also known for it's medicinal properties and culinary uses.
Here is an interesting fact that fennel along with anise are one of the primary ingredients of absinthe, the alcoholic beverage. It features prominently in the Greek mythology.
Fennel plants stems are hollow and it's leaves grow up to 40 cm long. Fennel seeds are dry. Both the leaves and seeds are used for medicinal and cooking purposes. Fennel has been used for developing natural vitamins for many health challenges but the main ones are hypertension, eye vision, and to improve the milk supply of breastfeeding mothers.
Dried fennel seeds are widely used as mouth freshener after the food in the Indian Subcontinent. The bulb of the fennel is also used as a vegetable, whereas the leaves are added to soups and curries and also eaten raw as salad.

It also contains a long list of vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients and antioxidants:

It has been used for a variety of health vitamins and supplements for a very long time. When you look at the long list of health benefits, then you know the reason why this is used so widely.
Based on my personal knowledge, I can share only few benefits but I will include a good resource here for those who want to learn more about it's health benefits.

- Fennel Juice from it's leaves and root is also used as an antidote for food poisoning.
- My grandpa used to give fennel, cumin and coriander blended powder for many purposes such as calming effect, digestion help and to breastfeeding moms for more mother's milk.
- My grandma used to make face mask with fennel seeds and turmeric

Other Popular Uses of Fennel Seeds
Besides the above benefits shared, there are many other exotic benefits of taking fennel seeds.
- In many East Indian restaurants, you can see it on the counter and the tradition is that after paying bill for the food, you can take it. It is customary and you don't have to pay extra for it.
- In many facial masks especially the herbal ones, you can see fennel seeds as one of the ingredients.
- Fennel bulb is a good source of fiber and if you want to take a fiber-rich diet, you can use the bulb for salad or you can make a curry.
In addition to its popular use as a breath freshener, I want to summarize that fennel helps facilitates better health due to many amazing properties such as stomachic, carminative, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, expectorant, diuretic, emmenagogue, depurative, anticarcinogenic and antioxidant.
